HUNTINGTON BEACH : Marina High Hosts ‘Election ‘92’ Series

Marina High School has scheduled a program of debates by local candidates, appearances by government experts and exercises by government students in an effort to get youths interested in participating in the political system.

The series, “Election ‘92,” is held in the school cafeteria on Tuesday evenings, usually starting at 6 p.m.

Next in the school’s series of political programs will be an appearance by Huntington Beach City Council candidates Tuesday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Marina High cafeteria.

On Friday, students will engage in a debate on campaign spending at 3 p.m. An hour later, Cal State Fullerton political science professor Phil Gianos will deliver a lecture on the election process.

The students will take part in a simulated school board meeting at 6 p.m on Oct. 20. At 7 p.m., candidates for the Huntington Beach Union High School District are scheduled to debate.

On Oct. 27, students will participate in a mock legislative hearing at 6 p.m. and then hear candidates for the Coast Community College District starting at 7 p.m.

Students will take part in a mock election at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3 and then monitor and analyze local and national election results.

All the events are free and open to the public.
