COSTA MESA : Revitalizing Business District to Be Studied

In an effort to pump up the sagging business sector, the City Council this week agreed to hold a series of round-table discussions with business and community leaders.

Requested by the Chamber of Commerce, the meetings are touted as a way of coming up with strategies to keep companies from leaving town.

“It gives us an opportunity to lay things out on the table and become a problem-solving unit,” said Charles Wilson of Southern California Edison Co., who brought the idea to the council on behalf of the chamber.

Initially, the round-table discussions will be held on a quarterly basis and include about 25 representatives from groups like the Downtown Merchants Assn., South Coast Metro Assn., landowners, developers and educators. Topics to be addressed include getting city permits, signs, costs of utilities and trash collection.

City Council members, who unanimously approved the plan, lauded the talks as a step in the right direction.

“It is wonderful to see the private sector step forward,” remarked Mayor Mary Hornbuckle about the chamber taking the initiative for the project.
