Longest Season Ends for Dodger Fans
Peter O’Malley apparently didn’t take a course in baseball history at Wharton. If he had, he’d know that the 1921-64 Yankee dynasty of Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle was created by General Manager Ed Barrow and continued under successor George Weiss. Its death knell was sounded, not when Mantle left, but when Weiss retired after the 1960 season. The Yankees won their last pennant with his players in 1964 and then faded into oblivion.
The 1947-88 Dodger dynasty was created by Branch Rickey and maintained by Buzzie Bavasi and Al Campanis. When Campanis was fired in 1987 and his players dispersed, the Dodger demise was inevitable.
