SOUTH LOS ANGELES : Public Libraries Seek Storytellers
The Los Angeles Public Library’s “Grandparents and Books” program is seeking volunteers to read to children at 16 public libraries in South and South-Central Los Angeles.
The program pairs elementary school children with individuals 50 and older in informal reading tutorials. Adults read to children Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. After two sessions, children receive free paperback books.
“It’s our way of bringing older adults together with younger children to share the love of reading,” said Maureen Wade, the senior children’s librarian for the Los Angeles Public Library. “We also want the adults to serve as role models.”
Since 1988, more than 80,000 children and 300 volunteers have participated in the project at 47 public libraries throughout the city. The program’s $150,000 annual budget is funded by private donations, state and city sources and the Los Angeles Public Library.
