HARVARD HEIGHTS : A Bright Idea for the Neighborhood

The Harvard Heights Neighborhood Assn. has announced plans to literally shed more light on the community.

With a matching grant from Councilman Nate Holden’s office, the association announced Tuesday that it has purchased 40 sensor lights for distribution to its members. The lights, which turn on automatically when someone passes by, will be attached to homes and buildings.

The boundaries of Harvard Heights are Western and Normandie avenues on the west and east and Pico and Washington boulevards on the north and south. The association has about 200 members, including homeowners and renters, according to the group’s officers.

In addition to the sensor-light program, the association will also participate in a neighborhood-wide cleanup Nov. 14 called Project BOND--Beautify Our Neighborhood District.

The cleanup will target the commercial strips along Pico and Venice boulevards, with participants cleaning sidewalk benches, mowing grass, repainting red zones along curbs and planting creeping fig to cover some walls often marked with graffiti, said Jon Rake, an association co-president.
