San Gabriel : Synchronized Signals
To improve traffic flow, the City Council last week unanimously granted authority to Los Angeles County to synchronize signals on San Gabriel Boulevard.
Deputy City Administrator John E. Nowak said state money will pay to upgrade controllers and other equipment that the city would then maintain. Nowak said up-to-date equipment could cost less to operate and repair than the present signals.
When completed, coordination of signals on San Gabriel Boulevard between Duarte Road in San Marino and Towne Center Drive in Rosemead could reduce pollutants by 210,000 pounds per year, said John Hill, traffic engineer with the county Department of Public Works.
The city councils of San Marino and Rosemead also must approve the plan before the county seeks bids from contractors to install the improvements.
