Four Pasadena students at the County High School for the Arts will participate in a new opera, “A Place to Call Home,” produced by the Los Angeles Music Center Opera.

They are singers Ian Fryman, Charles Parker, Katrina Kurutz and Deanna Morgan.

Edward Barnes’ opera about the plight of young immigrants in modern Los Angeles will be performed through Wednesday at the John Anson Ford Cultural Center.

Four professional singers, Wonjung Kimm, Stephanie Vlahos, Greg Fedderly and Richard Bernstein, will be joined by about 60 students who will serve as dancers, musicians, understudies and members of the chorus.

The opera is based on Barnes’ interviews with students who have moved to Los Angeles from Mexico, El Salvador, Vietnam and Cambodia, and tells the story of young political refugees who come to Southern California without their parents. It touches on such issues as identity, traditions and lifestyle choices.

Performances will begin at 8 p.m. in the center’s 1,200-seat outdoor amphitheater at 2850 Cahuenga Blvd. East in the Hollywood Hills. Tickets--$15 for adults; $5 for students--are available through Ticketmaster outlets.
