Gordon Wins in Del Mar Half of His Personal Doubleheader
After warming up by racing for nearly five hours Saturday morning in the southern Nevada desert, Robby Gordon flew from Las Vegas in time to win his third consecutive Exxon Supreme Series championship at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. He drove a Ford Mustang for the Jack Roush Whistler team.
Gordon won wire to wire in the one-hour Exxon race after finishing second in the family’s Ford pickup truck in the Gold Coast 300, a High Desert Racing Assn. event that started at 7 a.m. Brian Collins won in that race in a Porsche-powered desert buggy after Gordon had to stop five times to change flat tires.
Steve Millen, a Nissan driver from Newport Beach, finished sixth in the race to win the Exxon series championship by four points over Paul Gentilozzi of Lansing, Mich. Gentilozzi, driving an Olds Cutlass, finished second Saturday, 7.7 seconds behind Gordon, who lives in Orange.
