Winston Cup points leader Bill Elliott and runner-up Davey Allison will start behind the pack for today’s Mello Yello 500 at North Carolina’s Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Allison failed to make the top 20 during the first round of qualifying and settled for the 22nd starting spot in the 40-car lineup. Elliott will start 16th.
With four races remaining in the series, Allison trails Elliott by 67 points.
Alan Kulwicki trails Allison by 74 points, and Harry Gant is 167 points behind Elliott.
Kulwicki, who set a qualifying record, will start from the pole, with Gant 18th.
