A SOAR WINNER

Share

“Sky Jocks of the Sierra” (by Dan Weikel, Aug. 30) neglected to mention one of the pioneers of soaring--Robert Symons of Bishop, Calif.

Bishop’s loss of a leg in a farming accident was no impediment to his skills, which included one of the first successful cloud-seed operations, design and construction of experimental glider planes for high-altitude research, and flying to remote areas of the High Sierra.

He also was known as the dean of Sierra Wave soaring for his experiments involving that phenomenon.
