Miami Moves Up in the Polls After Defeating Penn State
After beating Penn State, 17-14, Saturday, Miami edged past Washington by one point for the No. 1 spot in the USA Today/CNN coaches’ survey and moved to within a point of the Huskies for the top spot in the Associated Press poll.
Washington (5-0) beat California, 36-16, Saturday for its third victory in a row over a ranked team. Miami’s victory over the Nittany Lions on Saturday was its second in a row over a top-10 team.
Miami and Washington each received 30 1/2 first-place votes in the AP poll. But the Huskies got one more point (1,517 1/2-1,516 1/2) because one voter listed Alabama first, Washington second and Miami third. Another split the No. 1 vote between Miami and Washington, last year’s co-national champions.
The Alabama vote came from Corky Simpson, a columnist with the Tucson Citizen, who said he has voted the Crimson Tide No. 1 all season.
Michigan remained third in this week’s AP poll. Rounding out the top 10 are Alabama, Texas A&M;, Florida State, Colorado, Stanford, Penn State and Georgia.
USC is 18th in the AP poll and UCLA, which lost to Stanford, 19-7, Saturday, dropped out of the top 25.
