Bryan Shelton and Goran Prpic advanced to the second round of the Seiko Super tournament at Tokyo.
Shelton, ranked 76th in the world, was successful on 79% of his first serves to beat Patrik Kuhnen, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Prpic defeated Byron Black, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Jim Courier, the world’s top-ranked player, and Andre Agassi withdrew from the tournament. Courier has a viral inflammation. Agassi has flu and thigh pains.
