L.A. Gear said it lost $11.4 million in the third quarter--the same as last year--but quarterly sales dropped 20%.

The Los Angeles-based athletic footwear producer said it had sales of $136.4 million for the quarter that ended Aug. 31, compared to $170.5 million reported during the same quarter a year ago.

Chairman Stanley Gold said the company is trying to boost sales by improving product quality.
