SEAL BEACH : Ammo Truck Fire Injures 2 Workers

A tractor-trailer filled with ammunition caught fire at Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station Tuesday, causing minor injuries to two employees who were unloading it.

Navy firefighters extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes, said Richard Williamson, the station’s public affairs officer.

The men, whose names were not released, were working near the vehicle when a flare which was part of the cargo ignited at 2:15 p.m., Williamson said.

“Fortunately, there were no serious injuries,” Williamson said. “For whatever reason, we had an accident. We are conducting an investigation to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Ten engines from the Orange County Fire Department were called to the scene as a precaution but they were not needed.

“It was a safety precaution,” Williamson said. “If anything had happened to our crews or if the fire had ignited the building, they would have been there to step right in. With explosives, you need to minimize your exposure.”

The total cost of damage has not yet been determined, Williamson said.
