Maywood : 5% Utilities Tax Approved to Offset State Budget Cuts

Share

A 5% utility users tax was approved Tuesday as the City Council attempted to make up budget shortfalls expected because of state budget cuts.

The tax will be applied to gas, telephone, electricity, trash and water bills for commercial, residential and industrial customers.

The tax was approved by council members Rose Marie Busciglio, William A. Hamilton and Dorothy Ramirez. Councilmen Henry Santiago and Thomas Engle were not present.

Senior citizens and those receiving Supplemental Social Security are exempt from the increase, which is expected to begin with December bills.

City Manager Ron Lindsey said he thought Maywood “could weather the cuts made this year” in the city’s $4-million budget but that he is concerned about fiscal problems in future years.
