LOS ANGELES : Two UCLA Fraternities Suspended During Probe

Share

UCLA officials announced Thursday that two fraternities have been indefinitely suspended from official campus activities because of songbooks and new member manuals that contained material offensive to women and ethnic minorities.

The suspensions of Theta Xi and Sigma Pi will continue until a campus investigation is finished. The fraternities contend that the materials had been out of use and that the clubs should not be penalized. A third UCLA fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi, has been under suspension since last spring because of a similar dispute over songbook lyrics.

In another UCLA matter, officials have canceled all on-campus student dances for an indefinite period because of looting that erupted in the Student Union stores after a fraternity-sponsored dance last month. Outsiders denied admission to the dance broke windows and gates at the stores and stole merchandise. A student committee is working on improving security measures.
