SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS : Agency Plans Open House in New Office

The California Department of Parks and Recreation will hold an open house today at its new Angeles District headquarters in Malibu Creek State Park, agency officials have announced.

The event, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1925 Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas, is meant to acquaint the public with recent changes in area park operations.

The state agency moved its district headquarters in July from Newbury Park to Malibu Creek State Park. In addition, the district’s territory was expanded and its name changed from the Santa Monica Mountains District to the Angeles District.

The district, which formerly operated a string of state parks in the Santa Monica mountains and state beaches along the Malibu coast, now covers five additional desert state parks in the Antelope Valley and in Kern and San Bernardino counties.

Statewide, the number of state park districts has been trimmed from more than 50 to 23 as a result of similar changes elsewhere, said Russ Guiney, Malibu sector superintendent for the Angeles District.

The open house is meant “to let people know we’re at a new location” and to explain “the consolidations and efficiencies that we’re making,” Guiney said.

Those planning to attend are asked to call (818) 880 0350.
