FOOTHILLS : ‘Operation Sparkle’ Cleanup Returns

Share

The Los Angeles Police Department will hold the third Operation Sparkle on Saturday to clean up graffiti and litter throughout the San Fernando Valley.

Officers will act as crew leaders and join youths and other residents in painting over graffiti and collecting trash at 29 locations in the Valley from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The city-sponsored cleanup effort began in June, 1991, to improve community relations damaged by the Rodney G. King beating. In the first cleanup, more than 2,300 volunteers collected 185 tons of trash and used 1,747 gallons of paint to cover up graffiti.

The first 4,000 volunteers will receive Operation Sparkle T-shirts. Following the cleanup, picnics will be held at Valley police stations for volunteers.
