POMONA : Gang Member Convicted in Shopping Mall Shooting

Share

A Monrovia man was found guilty Friday of criminal charges stemming from a Feb. 24 gang-related shooting at a West Covina shopping mall that left two people wounded.

A Pomona Superior Court jury deliberated for a day and a half before finding Edmund Anthony Luera, 18, guilty of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into an occupied building.

During Luera’s one-week trial, several witnesses were reluctant to identify him as one of the shooters for fear of gang retaliation, prosecutors said.

The shooting occurred at 6:30 p.m. in The Plaza after rival gang members confronted each other. Luera and one of his companions, Richard Ramos, 19, of Monterey Park, pulled out automatic weapons and began firing at the others. Ramos pleaded no contest March 19 and received a life sentence with eligibility for parole in seven years. Luera, who could receive life in prison with no parole for 35 years, will be sentenced Feb. 16.
