MAPUTO, Mozambique —
President Joaquim Chissano said Friday that a cease-fire had started and Mozambique’s 16-year civil war was officially over following the signing of a peace agreement with Renamo rebels.
“The cease-fire began yesterday (Thursday),” the president told a rally of tens of thousands of cheering people in the Maputo suburb of Chamanculo.
The first group of 20 U.N. observers to monitor the cease-fire arrived in the Mozambican capital Thursday.
