Black Upsets No. 2 Connell in Wheelchair Tennis

Jim Black of Oceanside upset second-seeded Mick Connell of Australia, 6-4, 6-4, in a men’s singles quarterfinal match Friday at the U.S Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships at the Irvine Racquet Club.

Black, seeded fifth, will play third-seeded Brad Parks of San Clemente in the semifinals at 2 p.m. today. Steve Welch of Bedford, Tex., who is seeded fourth, will play top-seeded Laurent Giammartini of France in the other semifinal at 10 a.m.

In the women’s singles final at noon today, Nancy Olson of Stony Point, N.Y., who is seeded fourth, will play second-seeded Chantal Vandierendonck of the Netherlands. Admission is free.
