SHOOTING THE BOH: A Woman’s Voyage Down the Wildest River in Borneo by Tracy Johnston (Vintage: $11; 256 pp . , paperback origial). Tracy Johnston recounts how she and 11 other people set out to ride an unmapped section of the Boh that the local Dyak people regarded as dangerous. Not surprisingly, the Dyaks were right: In addition to potentially deadly waterfalls and floods, the ill-prepared party had to cope with bad food, leeches, sweat-eating bees and an assortment of fungal infections. Johnston offers a lively account of her experiences, but she fails to convince the reader that the whole venture was anything more than a damn-fool stunt undertaken by people who have nothing better to do with their time.
