Case of the Illiterate 5th-Grader

Share

Regarding the story “Fifth-Grader’s Mother Sues School District” (Oct. 7): It hurt me to read the story knowing that everyone is affected in one way or another if just one student slips through the system with inadequate skills.

To be unable to feel like a contributing person in society should be offensive to all. Our school system cannot and should not be held responsible for the problems of our communities.

The “you get your expert witness and we’ll get ours” mentality does very little to solve or treat the cancer that is eating away at our future: the children.

The problem is as big as the state and federal deficits and as small as parents opening books and reading with their kids.

I know a teacher at Glenn Martin Elementary. If she is indicative of her colleagues, they give far more with much less today and are a true asset to their careers, community and schools.

How does the quote go? It will be a fine day when the Air Force holds a bake sale to buy a new bomber, and our schools have all the money they need.
