Tent Cities

On Oct. 5, the City Council listened to the citizens of San Diego and said “no” to tent cities and spending $300,000 of our hard-earned money on those who will not work or provide for themselves. It was a long afternoon, but Abbe Wolfsheimer was very wrong when she said, “We’ve done nothing in six hours.” What was done was limit expenditures by the council to $45,000 instead of more than $300,000 of other people’s money.

That this process brought tears to Larry Milligan’s eyes is not surprising since he lost out on the $35,000-$85,000 that John Hartley’s plan would have set aside for the plum job of City Homeless Coordinator. Milligan’s newsletter has spent months trying to convince those who guard the city’s purse strings that San Diego has a shelter crisis. But in San Diego, with an average summer temperature of 70 degrees and an average winter temperature of 57 degrees, shelter is unnecessary, and a nice luxury.

The term crisis is just a word to evoke unreasoned sympathy, and a slippery way for those that will not earn a living to stick their hands into the pockets of those that do.
