Koy Detmer brought seventh-ranked Colorado from behind, but didn’t want any credit.

Mitch Berger kicked a 53-yard field goal on the last play of the game Saturday night to give the Buffaloes a 24-24 tie with Oklahoma in a Big Eight Conference game at Boulder, Colo.

Detmer, a freshman starting his first collegiate game in place of injured Kordell Stewart, completed 33 of 50 passes for 418 yards and led Colorado, 5-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Big Eight, to 17 points in the fourth quarter.

However he threw five interceptions and two lost fumbles.

“I think I prevented us from winning,” said Detmer, who bailed out the Buffaloes in a relief role in two previous games this season. “I made some errors, and you can’t have those kinds of mistakes in a game like this.

Berger was also replacing a starter. Pat Blottiaux sat out the second half after injuring his right quadriceps muscle in warmups and aggravating the injury when he missed a 30-yard field-goal attempt at the end of the half.

Berger, Colorado’s punter and kickoff specialist, missed a 39-yard field-goal try with 9:17 left.

Cornerback Darrius Johnson gave Oklahoma (3-2-1, 1-0-1) a 24-14 lead with 5:09 remaining by returning an interception 17 yards for a touchdown.

Detmer’s long pass was intercepted moments later, but Sooner fullback Kenyon Rasheed fumbled the ball back to Colorado at the Oklahoma 38-yard line on the next play. Detmer completed passes of 17 and 18 yards to Charles Johnson to set up Lamont Warren’s three-yard scoring run with 3:14 left to make it 24-21.

Oklahoma State 28, Missouri 26--Gary Porter passed for 261 yards and two touchdowns and the Cowboys survived a record-setting day by Tiger quarterback Jeff Handy at Stillwater, Okla.

Oklahoma State (3-3, 1-1) scored only one offensive touchdown in its previous four games.

Handy completed 43 of 73 passes--both Big Eight records--for a school-record 480 yards and three touchdowns, but his two interceptions cost the Tigers (1-5, 0-2).

The previous Big Eight record for completions was 35 by David Jaynes of Kansas against Tennessee in 1973. The record for attempts was 61 by Lynn Dickey of Kansas State against Colorado in 1969.

Utah State 28, Kansas State 16--Dave Balls and Jermaine Younger ran back interceptions for touchdowns in the third quarter and the Aggies beat the Wildcats (3-2) in a nonconference game at Logan, Utah.

Utah State (2-4) had four interceptions and recovered a fumble in the Aggies’ first victory over a non-Big West Conference team since 1987.
