STYLE : LOOKS : The Garbo Look

The most important cosmetics trend for fall is an updated Greta Garbo look like the one created here by Antonella Renyer, a makeup artist with the agency Cloutier. “In the ‘40s, they painted eyebrows with cake eyeliner,” Renyer says. “Lips were bright red and overdrawn. I used the same techniques, but I softened everything.”

Starting with model Meg Register’s fair but uneven skin tone, Renyer applied a cinematic foundation that she bought in France. “A Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent or any creamy foundation with fairly heavy coverage would also work,” she says. “It takes a lot of blending to make sure it’s smooth and not thick.”

Renyer set the base with a lightweight, matte powder--”Estee Lauder makes a good compact powder that works nicely”--then rubbed on a peach-tone blush in a circular motion around the cheekbones.

Eyebrows are crucial, she says. “I used a soft brown pencil from Estee Lauder, starting above the inside of the eye, then drew a high arch beyond the outside of the eye.” A CiCi liner and Christian Dior’s five-shadow compact Brume Mist followed.

Lips, lined in taupe, were filled in with a blend of red and brown (M.A.C.’s Russet and Luxe). For a final ‘40s touch, Renyer blotted lips with a tissue, brushed on a little powder and brushed it off again.

The Garbo look is dramatic, but it doesn’t happen quickly, she says. “Plan on spending about 30 minutes if you want a nice job.”
