New Machine Reads Text for the Blind: Xerox Corp. said it has developed a smaller, cheaper version of a machine that uses optical character recognition technology to read books and other texts to the blind using a synthesized voice. The portable machine, called the Reading Edge, is cheaper, smaller and lighter than the previous generation of Xerox reading machines. Xerox says it sees a growing market for such a device because of the new federal Americans with Disabilities Act, which as of next July will require many businesses to modify facilities to accommodate people with impaired vision and other disabilities.
