COUNTYWIDE : Deadline is Friday for Cleanup Grants

Share

Businesses have until Friday to apply for state grants to help defray the cost of cleaning up pollution caused by underground tanks, a spokeswoman for the Ventura County Economic Development Assn. said today.

A fund administered by the California Water Resources Control Board makes cleanup grants of up to $1 million available to companies with the greatest need, said Janet J. Dillon, co-chairwoman of the association’s Environmental Affairs Committee.

Businesses selected for a grant must pay up to $10,000 of the cost, Dillon said. Grants are made based on priority, with the greatest number going to cleanup contamination from tanks on residential property, she said.

The Water Resources Control Board will establish a new priority list based on applications received, she said.

Environmental laws mandate that businesses cleanup oil, gas and other hazardous substances leaking from underground tanks.
