The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games will announce this week it wants to include golf, featuring men and women professionals, in the 1996 Summer Games and plans to hold the competition at Augusta National Golf Club, according to the Washington Post.

Although the International Olympic Committee must give its approval and other details must be resolved, according to sources within the Olympic community golf has the backing of the IOC, the Post reported. The competition would be a medal sport--not an exhibition or demonstration event--and would feature teams from about 20 countries, including the host United States. It’s likely each country would be allowed to have three men and three women players, with medals awarded in individual competition.
