In the city improvement department: Hedley Builders Inc. in Newport Beach has been awarded a construction contract to build a 55,140-square-foot public health facility for the city of Long Beach. Work will start next month on the project, which will house a variety of medical services ranging from prenatal care to refugee services and a children’s dental practice.
* The architectural firm LPA Inc., which has offices in Irvine, has been selected to design a $2.25-million community recreation center and gymnasium at El Camino Park in Orange. In addition to the gym, the 23,500-square-foot center will include a multipurpose room, kitchen, restrooms, showers, lockers, offices and equipment storage space.
* And the Newport Beach City Council recently received a $360,000 second installment of privately raised construction funds for the new 54,000-square-foot Newport Beach Central Library. The check from the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation follows the group’s $1-million gift earlier this year. The $14-million library is being built as a public and private partnership. Other money is coming from the city of Newport Beach’s general fund, proceeds from the sale of certificates of participation and a grant from the California State Library. The four-acre site for the new facility came from Irvine Co., which swapped it for the 1.97-acre site of the current Newport Center Library.
