BALDWIN PARK : 2 Ex-Officers Charged in Beating of Suspect
- Share via
Two former Baldwin Park police officers who allegedly beat a burglary suspect last year were charged Monday with assault, using police authority in an unnecessary assault and falsifying a report.
Louis Price, 28, and Kenneth Shearen, 37, are expected to surrender Thursday to the district attorney’s office on the felony criminal charges and be arraigned. They could be sentenced to seven years in state prison if convicted.
The two were accused by fellow Officer Steven Julian of beating Gilbert Gutierrez, 35, on Feb. 11, 1991. Gutierrez was arrested after a Baldwin Park gas station was burglarized.
Julian, the primary witness against the officers, said Price and Shearen hit Gutierrez with a baton and flashlight. The two officers claimed that Gutierrez sustained a broken rib and head injury when he fell off a garage roof, where he was allegedly hiding.
Price, a rookie officer a month away from fulfilling his probationary period at the time, resigned last year. Shearen is appealing his dismissal.
