COMPTON : College Suspends 2 Officials in Financial Probe
Two Compton Community College administrators have been placed on paid administrative leave after the release last week of a U.S. Department of Education report that uncovered questionable spending and other abuses in three programs that have received $1.5 million in federal grants since 1990.
Velta J. Jones, associate dean of community services, who managed the programs, and her supervisor, James Willard, dean of instruction, were notified of their suspensions Friday, Jones’ attorney, Myles Berman, said.
The two will remain on leave until an independent audit of the grants is competed in early December, college President Warren A. Washington said. The board of trustees last week hired the firm Coopers & Lybrand to investigate the allegations.
