Stumping by bus across New Jersey, Vice President Dan Quayle continued to hammer away at Democratic nominee Bill Clinton’s alleged character flaws and promised a “November surprise”--the reelection of President Bush.

Quayle’s motorcade was greeted by a man wearing a Clinton mask at a rally at the New Woodbine Inn here in south Jersey, symbolizing the specter that haunts the Bush-Quayle ticket as it enters the final two weeks of the 1992 campaign.

Everywhere he goes, Quayle is met by Clinton demonstrators among the crowds of Republican faithful. Still, Quayle presses on, warning of the risk posed by the Democratic ticket and warning that Clinton and running mate Al Gore represent a return to failed Democratic policies of the past.

Quayle repeatedly returned to the themes of “character” and “trust” in his appearances Monday.

“Just tune in tonight (to the final presidential debate), listen very closely and ask yourself this question: Who do you trust to be President of the United States. Who’s got the character? Who’s got the determination? Who’s got the experience? Who’s got the best ideas to lead this country forward?

“I submit to you it’s George Bush for four more years,” Quayle said at a stop in Vineland, N.J., early in the day.

Quayle’s Victory II motorcade traveled up the New Jersey Turnpike, stopping at two rest areas to greet voters, then ventured into Manhattan to address the New York Conservative Party’s 30th anniversary dinner.
