NATO to Plan Peacekeeping Role
The United States and its NATO allies agreed Tuesday to draw up plans for a new post-Cold War peacekeeping role in European conflicts.
U.S. Defense Secretary Dick Cheney met with his counterparts from 15 other nations in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization at the Gleneagles resort in northern Scotland.
The purpose of the two-day meeting was to assess nuclear strategy and reduce NATO’s nuclear arsenal in Europe, but the ministers also called for their senior military officials to draw up plans in the next two months for NATO to take on a strong role as a European peacekeeper.
The alliance’s foreign ministers decided in June that their troops and equipment could be used for peacekeeping outside NATO territory. To date there have been no requests from the 52-nation Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe for such units.
