Monterey Park : Suit Over Garvey Reservoir

Share

The city has filed suit against the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California in another attempt to prevent the reopening of the Garvey Reservoir.

Filed last week in Los Angeles County Superior Court, the complaint challenges the water district’s decision to restore and run the city’s damaged reservoir. The reservoir was drained in 1989 after cracks were discovered. The resulting seepage was blamed for flooding a dozen residences next to the 41-acre facility.

In the suit, the city says the district failed to analyze the environmental impact of restoring and operating the reservoir. The city, which seeks no monetary damages, asks the court to require the district to consider alternative reservoir sites in Southern California.

Spokesman Bob Gomperz said district officials have not seen the lawsuit and, therefore, would not comment.
