La Canada Flintridge : Curbside Recycling Thefts
A city public works official has asked for help from the public in preventing scavengers from stealing from the city’s curbside recycling program.
Public works assistant Mindy Jacobs said theft of aluminum cans and glass bottles, the most valuable recyclables, has been a problem since the program began in January, 1990.
Because it lowers the revenue to the city’s recycling contractor, Circo Recyclers, the pilferage could force the city to increase charges to residents, Jacobs said. Residents should contact the complaint desk at the La Crescenta Valley sheriff’s station if they observe scavenging.
The crime is punishable by $100 for a first offense, $200 for a second and $500 for a third. Two arrests have been made thus far, Jacobs said.
