Share

Residents from throughout the county can learn today how they would be affected by a proposed federal plan to guide development and future restoration of the Santa Clara River, which stretches from its headwaters in Los Angeles County to its estuary in Oxnard.

Representatives from the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the California Coastal Conservancy, Ventura County Flood Control District, property owners and others will speak at the two-hour meeting beginning at 4 p.m. today at the train depot in Santa Paula.

The meeting, sponsored by the Santa Clara River Valley Property Owners Assn., was organized to ensure that area property owners have a voice in the process, said Bill Bartels, a Fillmore area resident and member of the association.

Rex Laird, executive director of the Ventura County Farm Bureau, said organizers hope that residents will get involved with the plan’s development from its inception.

The Santa Clara River and Watershed Enhancement/Management Plan will offer an analysis of the river, including its resources, hydrology and present uses, which include rock and sand mining, farming and water conveyance.

The plan will recommend a restoration plan and point out which of the present uses conflict with the river as a natural system.
