HIGH LIFE: A WEEKLY FORUM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS : Exchange Summer for Opportunity

Share

Teen-agers tired of Orange County’s long summers and warm beaches, take note. Here’s a chance to spend time in the decidedly cooler climate of Canada, Holland, Germany, Estonia, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland or Great Britain.

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is offering both yearlong and summer exchanges in those countries as well as in Mexico, Japan, Spain, Portugal, France and Italy.

The program is open to students age 15 to 18. Teen-agers are chosen based on their academic performance and character references. The students stay with families in the host country they choose.

BJ’s Chicago Pizzeria is implementing a program to help the Capistrano Valley School District acquire classroom materials through the purchase of pizzas.

The district’s 30 schools are being asked to create a “wish list” of three items of varying costs that they can’t afford. BJ’s will print ID cards for all students and faculty in the district. When they visit the BJ’s in San Juan Capistrano, they will receive certificates amounting to 10% of their bill. Credit will be issued when the certificates are returned to their respective schools.

When winter break commences, all certificates will be submitted to BJ’s corporate office, and management will purchase the desired items the school has earned. If preferred, the entire certificate amount can be redeemed for cash and spent as the schools deem fit.

BJ’s will duplicate the program in areas near its other locations--including Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and Santa Ana--if this test program is a success.
