Mobil said its earnings, which rose 13%, also were helped by a cost-cutting program that eliminated about 2,000 jobs this year.

Mobil’s earnings for the July-September quarter rose to $413 million, or $1 a share, on $16.24 billion in sales. In the same period last year, the company earned $365 million, or 87 cents a share, on sales of $15.03 billion.

The Fairfax, Va.-based company had several special charges and gains in both periods that largely offset each other. Excluding the one-time items, earnings rose 11% to $438 million.
