Robert K. Gray Resigns as Chairman of Hill & Knowlton: A statement issued by Hill & Knowlton did not disclose the reason for the longtime Washington insider’s departure. The firm, owned by the British conglomerate WPP Group, did not immediately name a successor. Sources close to the company, one of the nation’s leading public relations firms, said Gray had been under pressure because of Hill & Knowlton’s financial problems, loss of clients and negative publicity from its controversial clients in recent years. Gray, 71, is a conservative Republican who was secretary of the Cabinet under President Eisenhower and director of communications for the 1980 Reagan-Bush campaign. He was named Hill & Knowlton’s chairman of the board last year.
