COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Irvine Reaches Semifinals in Water Polo
UC Irvine advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo tournament by winning its 11th consecutive match Saturday at Belmont Plaza.
Steve Gill scored four goals as fourth-seeded Irvine (14-6) defeated Pepperdine, 9-6, in the quarterfinals.
Irvine will play top-seeded California in one semifinal, and second-seeded Stanford will play third-seeded USC in the other. The championship match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Belmont Plaza.
In the opening round, Marc Hunt scored three goals in Irvine’s 16-5 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:
Cal Baptist 1, Christ College Irvine 0--Pablo Orantes scored the only goal with 9:33 remaining for visiting Cal Baptist. Goalie Eddie Huerta had five saves for CCI (2-14-1, 0-7-1).
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s soccer:
Cal State Bakersfield 3, Chapman 0--Luis Berbari led Cal State Bakersfield (11-3-3, 8-1-2) to victory with two goals. Teammate Jeremy Gunn had Cal State Bakersfield’s first goal. Scott Zinser had five saves for Chapman (5-10, 1-8).
In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:
Azusa Pacific 2, Southern California College 1--Carl Stoehr scored the winning goal in the second half for host Azusa Pacific.
Chris Chaparro scored the only goal for Southern California College (10-7-1, 3-3-1).
In nonconference women’s soccer:
Cal State Hayward 4, Chapman 2 (OT)--Hayward’s Stacey Nadol scored her first of two goals at the end of regulation to tie the score, 2-2. Chapman held a 2-1 lead at the half after an own goal and a goal by Carey Wright. Tessa Christenson had nine saves for Chapman.
Cal State San Bernardino 2, UC Irvine 1--Jenni Tanaka scored Irvine’s only goal. Candice Aldana and Jackie Powers scored for San Bernardino (11-6-1). Amee Chapman had one save for Irvine (8-8-2).
In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:
Cal State Long Beach 3, UC Irvine 0--Nichelle Burton had 15 kills in a 15-5, 15-8, 15-10 victory for Cal State Long Beach (17-1, 9-0). Scotleen Risley had 10 kills for Irvine (11-10, 4-8).
San Jose State 3, CS Fullerton 0--Mindy Czuleger had 13 kills for visiting San Jose State (9-12, 5-5), which won 15-3, 15-13, 15-5. Lisa Parbst had 14 kills for Fullerton (0-17, 0-11).
In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:
Westmont 3, Southern California College 1--Jayna Auer had 16 kills, but Southern California College (6-16, 3-7) lost to Westmont (25-3, 9-1), 15-10, 15-8, 7-15 and 15-13.
