Religious Right and Politics

I’m very distressed over the attempt of Christian right-wing conservatives to take control of not only our state and local governments but our national government as well. Anyone familiar with world and church history knows that when church and state join forces terrible persecution results.

This country was founded by people who wanted to escape religious persecution--people who wanted the right to worship God or not to worship God, according to their own consciences. The people we need to elect to run this country are ones who guarantee us “freedom of religion.” That means everyone--all the different Christian denominations, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, even atheists.

My husband and I descended from French Huguenots who miraculously escaped the St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre in 1572. We’re devout Christians who heavily support our church both financially and personally. With no government help, our three children attended church school from the first grade through college. We’re not wealthy. We sacrificed.

Conservative Christians should influence others by Christlike love and service to mankind, not by using the strong arm of government to enforce their beliefs on unbelievers.

Though we voted Republican all our adult lives, we’re scared to death to vote for Republican candidates in this election.
