The city will hire a full-time inspector to monitor private work-furlough centers in San Diego.
The City Council approved a proposal Tuesday to assign a city inspector to oversee operations at three work-furlough centers and a soon-to-open facility. The privately run work-furlough programs have come under government scrutiny because of a lack of supervision and concerns about security.
Private work furlough allows low-risk convicts to stay out of the county’s jail system by agreeing to work and abide by rules of the facilities, while paying a $25 daily fee for room and board.
The new administrative inspector will be paid from a fee collected at each center.
