VAN NUYS : Grant to Enable Center to Reopen

A Van Nuys center that provides care for the elderly and the young will be able to reopen next year thanks to a $500,000 loan by First Interstate Bank of California, the center’s operators said Tuesday.

Remodeling began in April on the Mark Taper Intergenerational Center to be operated by the Organization for the Needs of the Elderly and the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles. The center will house two day-care programs for adults and children in adjoining buildings at 17400 Victory Blvd.

The bank agreed Tuesday to lend O.N.E. organizers $500,000, which “moves our scheduled opening ahead probably two or three years” to April, 1993, said Estelle Cooper, executive director of O.N.E.

The center is expected to serve 35 elderly people and 60 infants and children, Cooper said. When operating at full capacity the center will serve 180 adults and children.

Children and the elderly will participate together in supervised programs, including, music, exercise, arts and crafts, meals and gardening.

Earlier, the $2.1-million project received a $1-million grant from the Mark Taper Foundation.
