Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins filed for free agency, then described the action as “just a formality.”
Puckett, baseball’s first $3-million-a-year player, completed a $9-million, three-year contract this season and had proposed a $27.5 million, five-year extension in May only to be rejected by the Twins’ owner, Carl Pohlad. Puckett said he had no idea what comes next.
