World IN BRIEF : FRANCE : Paris Police Destroy Africans’ Tent City
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Parisian riot police demolished a tent city housing hundreds of poor African immigrants that was erected in May to protest the high cost of living in the French capital. Demolition of the Bois de Vincennes encampment in eastern Paris began at dawn. Hundreds of police threw up a cordon around the group of makeshift shelters that, at its height, housed an estimated 1,500 people. Residents were told to gather their belongings and board dozens of buses to be taken to temporary housing elsewhere.
