LOS ANGELES : Council Votes Funds for River Rescues During Rains

Share

The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Friday to spend $222,604 on a system to rescue people from the Los Angeles River channel during heavy flooding.

The money will be used to pay overtime to members of the Fire Department’s swift-water rescue teams and buy them equipment and supplies.

Creation of the rescue teams was triggered by the drowning of Adam Bischoff, 15, of Woodland Hills during heavy rain last February.

Under the city’s program, two dozen firefighters will be trained in techniques of swift-water rescues, several hundred police cars will be equipped with flotation devices, and key points along the river will be identified as rescue staging areas.
