The U.S. Navy is sending an attack submarine into the Persian Gulf to keep tabs on next month’s expected arrival of Iran’s first submarine, military sources said Friday.

In a statement issued late Friday, the Navy said the U.S. sub will enter the Gulf on Sunday. It will be the first time a U.S. submarine has entered those shallow waters, the Navy confirmed.

Sources said the sub will monitor the activities of the Iranian diesel submarine that Tehran bought from Russia and that is slowly making its way to Iran.
