Oakland-based Safeway Inc. said Steve Burd was named president.

In his new position, Burd will be responsible for overseeing the supermarket operator’s day-to-day activities and will report to Peter Magowan, who will continue as chairman and chief executive.

Burd, 43, is a long-time consultant to Safeway. He was involved in developing the company’s operating strategies in the mid-1980s, following Safeway’s buyout.
