A 27-year-old woman, despondent over a separation from her husband, killed herself and her five young children with exhaust fumes from the family car, a coroner said today.

The bodies were found Thursday in a remote area of western Montana by a relative, said Sanders County Coroner Mark Denke. He said he believed the murder-suicide took place Oct. 22 or 23.

The bodies of the five children were inside the car and the mother’s body was found outside the car near the tailpipe, Denke said.

“She wrote a note telling us what she was doing,” Denke said. “At 9:30 in the evening she gassed the children after they were asleep.”

He identified the woman as Mary Barnaby. The children were Richard Barnaby George, 8; Syrena George, 7; Jasmine Barnaby, 3; Eli George, 2, and Jacquelyn George, 6 months.

Denke said the father, Stanley George, left the family about a month ago and moved to Arizona.
